I'm not a scotch drinker as far as bar scotch...but there was one night I was covering a couple hours for a bartender and one o our members asked if he could bring in a scotch to let us sample...bring away! So he went home and came back with Johnnie Walker Blue...OMG it's so smooth! At the cost of it I guess it should be...then (this may be a Cardinal sin for some) he had me mix it 2/3 JWB 1/3 drambuie. OMG that was awesome too!

My wife's cousin's hubby and I have a New Years tradition. One of us always buys a really nice Scotch and we spend the weekend sippin' it until it's gone. This year I bought an 18 year old Laphroaig. About 25 miles down the road I realized I had left it on the bar at home. Too far to go back, so the next morning in Katy, we took off for Spec's and they didn't have that one, but they did have a 16 year old Lagavulin. I bought that one and that is truly the best Scotch I have ever drunk. I broke into the 18 year old Laphroaig when I got home and while it is a very fine dram it wasn't nearly as silky smooth as the Lagavulin.
The Ardbeg Uigeadail is right fine too and will beat both Laphroaig and Lagavulin for strength of smoke/peat, but that 16 year Lagavulin was truly "usquebaugh" (water of life).
I'll drink to that tradition

Yea, that's a very expensive "Rusty Nail" I never had Blue but I've heard good things about it - at $200 a bottle they should be.

I like Steely Dan ..... Bourbon & Whiskey for me though.
Well, Fish, I'm with you on the Bourbon. The Tennesee Sour Mash is just a bit too short of flavor for my taste. Unfortunately, I'm REAL fond of good Tequila too. Even some of the new artisnal Mescals are really good too.
I know, I know, most folks will chime in "Tequila....disgusting." and that is because their first experience was to drink a quart of rot gut Tequila (so called) in a frat house. Some of the good ones are really good. For example, I was on a fishing trip with a gaggle of buddies on the San Juan in New Mexico. One of those guys is a real Scotch and wine snob. He was lamenting the fact that he didn't bring a good Scotch with him and the local watering hole didn't have his brand. He asked me if I had brought anything with me. I replied, "Yeah, I brought a good Tequila." He turned his nose up and said "OK, give me a little, I guess." Upon his first sip, he said "Bullshit!...this isn't Tequila, this tastes more like a fine Brandy". No, my friend, it's just Jose Cuervo Reserva de La Familia. That was 10 years ago, and it was $100.00 a bottle then. Haven't bought any for a number of years, so I don't know what it goes for today. It's a damn fine quaff though.

Also fond of Rye. Sezerac is good, Bullit, Jim Beam. Prior to prohibition, most whiskey produced in the US was Rye. After prohibition, they needed to get product to market quick and cheap...so....corn! Rye has a more complex flavor. Love me some Rye.

.... I hear ya...... I'm not a real liquor drinker overall, mostly just beer.... And typically DON'T like Tequila, except in a Martguerita sometimes, but me bro brought some down to the man cave aboot a year ago & we sipped on it at room temp & it was really good.... Didn't taste like Tequila really to me..... Can't remember the brand, but I remember he said it was something like $52 a bottle.... Not a huge price, but definitely above the norm as far as taste goes..... Me old neighbor used to entertain a lot of "High Rollers", Senators, etc..... And he often invited me for dinner, or to come over after dinner to BS & drinks with these guys...... They always had $80+ bottles of wine & interesting $$$$ booze they offered & showed off..... I never asked what they cost, until they all left, cause I would never pay that much & was just curious on what some of that stuff cost..... It was not unusual for after dinner there was $500+ of wine consumed, for typically 4-6 people..... Then on to the after dinner drinks, desert wines & cocktail snacks...... ...... Way different than what I am used to $ wise, but they were great folks & I enjoyed hanging out with them..... Still see & have drinks with a couple of them from time to time.
My observation: Expensive, or should I say "Good" wines definitely tastes better than most "typical" wines, especially with dinner..... And from my experience, it is a pretty significant difference, taste wise, but cost wise is not something that I would pay for.

Blanton's is a rare treat if you can find it. Beam makes Knob Creek I believe... Beam also has a rye. I enjoy that too :{)
